Footballing Memories

Eddie Roche
A few words from a lifelong servant of the club and its President.

How did you get involved in schoolboy football?

My family were heavily involved in football. I had five brothers and we were always playing football on the road. My father was chairman of the Leinster Senior League so it started from there. He later become a legislator in the Leinster Football Association. My brother Michael played for Ireland.

What would you wish for the future of the club?

To keep improving and for the children to enjoy their football. It is important for a child to be involved in sport. I love to see past players come back to manage teams themselves. It makes me proud and I'm sure Bower would be too.

Who were your football heroes at the time?

I followed Shelboure F.C. at the time. I admired Peter Farrell who played for Shamrock Rovers who later became an Irish International.

The late John 'Bower' Bradley, and Eddie. Together, close to a century of voluntary service to Lourdes Celtic Football Club and the community of Crumlin.

What are some of your favourite memories during your time with Lourdes Celtic?

There are so many good memories. I would be here all day if I had to talk about the good times! And there are still more to come.

What was the early ambition for Lourdes Celtic Football Club?

My friend Bower and I wanted a better life for young boys in the area. Football was a source of freedom for them. It was joyous to be involved in such a great time in their lives. Our ambition was to win trophies and cups, and we did over the years. And to expand the club – give more kids the opportunity to play.

Can you sum up Lourdes Celtic Football Club in one sentence?

As our motto says, Strength through Loyalty.
